‘Social inequality exists. In Rotterdam and beyond. This is because poverty, racism, sexism and validism exist too. And so do many kinds of other forms of exclusion and discrimination. We recognise that. We also recognise that climate change and extreme weather increase existing inequality. Already now and even more so in the years to come.

Not everyone is exposed to the same risks and not everyone can protect themselves equally well or take preventive measures. The climate crisis is therefore a social crisis. And climate adaptation (adapting to the new climate reality) cannot be done without addressing inequality as well. In Rotterdam, everyone deserves an equal chance. ICAR is committed to preventing an increase in inequality and reducing existing inequality. So that Rotterdam becomes that healthy, green, attractive, strong city for everyone.’

Such is ICAR’s ambition. I developed a new communication strategy with them last year.
